Wood type: Locally Grown San Diego Live-Edge She-Oak

From the "Waves in the Wood" series

My most recent "live-edge" coastline discovery in the woodgrain. The wood from this Sheoak tree that had to be cut down near downtown San Diego continues to offer me the greatest of all natural canvases. Reports from the dudes at San Diego Urban Timber who were called in to salvage and up-cycle her was that it was a truly “middle-earthy” looking gangler’ upon a rare undeveloped hillside. Having now made a number of artworks from the tree I can see that what I’m working with is essentially an entire tree of burl. This is extraordinarily special wood in that sense. Usually a tree will produce a “burl ball” in one part of a tree when it incurs some stressful duress like a disease or a big boulder against it. Again this tree appears to burly the whole way through. It’s saga isn’t for not though since I’ve collaborated with it to reveal the many surfbreaks in the coves of it’s grain. This beast of a piece is available!

This is a painting I found within the grain lines of a singular board. It's an arial perspective of a fantasy coastline where the grain lines become the "Waves in the Wood" and was created with a process I've pioneered myself in which I paint with tinted resin. This non-yellowing ultra uv-resistant 'art resin' self leveling epoxy I use is specifically designed to ensure the preservation and protection of both the woodwork and the integrity of these beautiful colors! The glossy sheen finish also makes it washable with glass cleaner. The piece comes with it's own "French Cleat" for quick, easy and super secure hanging. All sides of this piece are sealed. Enjoy!
